It’s come to my attention via a podcast that I listen to just how many quote unquote official charts there are trying to capture the listening data of the general public, and basically so much of it is unrepresentative and bullshit algorithms that really don’t mean a whole lot.
So I thought hey, why don’t I make a monthly chart – the data is all there on my Last.fm page and as much as I wax on about what songs you should listen to, maybe the only way you’ll trust my recommendations is if you see what I actually listen to. Yes, this is massively self indulgent, but I have this big old website here that I paid the domain money for and I feel like I should populate just that little bit more, so here I am, finding a new regular slot to fill up with probably-irrelevant stuff that makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something today and to further justify the expenditure attached to this musical blogging endeavour.

That’s them, that’s the singles. I was on holiday and listening to podcasts a lot more this month so the charts are skewed towards new songs I listened to for this blog, but it’s nice to show a little more focus on my favourite-favourites. Taking the top 5: the presence of both Spirit and Shine is representative of how much I need to feel lifted; the Ed Sheeran track is really catchy as hell and if you haven’t listened to it yet then get on that; I still can’t get enough of Sam Fender; and my favourite new rapper NF is really representing.
Lower down, the Jonas Brothers are showing their omnipresent hold on my consciousness, and Lewis Capaldi’s Forever, an album track, that I didn’t come around to til, later, has really sunk it’s teeth into my brain.
Iainsights Top 10 Artists: July
Yeah, there they are, the Jonas Brother coming up top because I cannot stop listening to that album – I’m just super excited to see them next year, y’know? Also exposing to see that I too am unavoidably enjoying both Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran, because no amount of prejudice against them will get in the way of their good good songs.
And, that’s all really! Thank you for tuning into the first edition of this definitive new chart, check back next month to see the biggest hitters in music for August.
