My most common hypocrisy is when I include a song in my weekly roundup and give it a scathing, sarcastic, albeit positive review, and then it becomes one of the songs I listen to most that year, as if my brain is wired to champion those which I have personally deemed the underdog.
October was a relatively quiet month in terms of impact – sure, some great songs came out as they always do, but going through my weekly reviews I can only square down maybe one that could make my annual top 40. There are still 61 days to go, though, so maybe one of them is a sleeper hit – only time will tell.
Here it is, your October top 20.

It was pretty close this month and came down literally until I plugged the spare phone in that I use in my car to listen to music because it’s the only thing I own with a functioning aux-slot adding on those final few plays. Platt pipped Moncrieff and Noah Cyrus to the post by almost a whisper, but rightfully so as two months on, RAIN is proving to be one of the most consistently-playable songs of the year.
New entries further down from Bishop Briggs with her excellent Florence + the Machine meets Billie Eilish track, another banging Becky Hill feature, a really just great pop tune from E^ST, and the A R I Z O N A track that I so lovingly called predictable sad edm proving that I cannot help but love predictable sad edm. And of course there is Liza Minnelli, because of course she is.
Also, this is qwhite telling, isn’t it?
The October top 10 artists is a little different, take a look:
|#6||Tones and I|
I said it in an earlier post, but I’d like to reiterate just how much I think everyone should watch The Politician on Netflix. It’s so damn good and leading man Ben Platt plays his part so well in it, so much so that I’ve spent the better part of the month listening to his music on a loop.
Other points of note: I’ll be seeing James Morrison in around 10 days time, so that’s him up at number 2; Capaldi, the Jonas boys and Tones and I all have such solid collections of recent music; and Jax Jones has become the biggest hitting DJ of the year with loads of banging tunes.
And that’s it! Wow, thanks for indulging me once again. See you again next month, and see you on Monday for some more new music recommendations.
